With busy and hectic schedules, many of us forget to take the time to enjoy the outdoors and be a bit adventurous. The warmer weather and long bank holiday weekends in spring make this an excellent time of year to disconnect from your to-do list, get the family and get outside and active!
Whether you’re a UK native who is looking for some adventure over these bank holiday weekends, or a visitor looking to explore, we have compiled some of our favourite outdoor, activities all within a comfortable drive from one of our many car hire pick up and drop off locations across the UK.
Scuba Diving Scapa Flow, Orkney Islands, Scotland
Take a leisurely ferry trip from Aberdeen or enjoy a Scottish highland road trip and take the short ferry ride from John O’Groats to the Orkney Islands and visit Scapa Flow. A sheltered harbour used since Viking times, Scapa Flow has played an important role in travel, trade and war throughout the centuries.
Used as the main base of the British Grand Fleet in both World Wars, Scapa Flow is especially popular because of the wreckage of seven remaining ships of the Imperial German Navy’s High Seas Fleet. Although other waters may offer warmer water and better visibility, there are few other places in the world with such a selection of large, historic wrecks lying in shallow water and within close proximity.
Via Ferrata, Lake District, Cumbria
An easy few hours drive from our Manchester locations, you will find Honister Slate Mine. England’s first ever Via Ferrata - a series of steel ladders, rungs and bridges that originated in the Alps - following a Victorian miner’s footpath along the cliffs to the summit of Fleetwith Pike, at 2,126ft. If you’re a true thrill seeker, try Infinity Bridge, the longest bridge of its type in Britain. Step across a gorge, 2,000 feet above the valley floor, and take in the breathtaking industrial landscape steeped in centuries of slate mining history. If the weather is wet, head deep underground and explore the tunnels and caverns to learn what daily life was like for the miners.
Coasteering, Dorset
An exciting new way of exploring, coasteering adventures are available from the Highlands to Jersey. Pioneered in the UK, coasteering is a blend of rock-hopping, shore-scrambling, swell-riding, cave-exploring and cliff-jumping for the ultimate aquatic adventure this spring! However, this is not an activity we recommended doing alone, so why not bring all you’re your friend along? Better yet, engage an experienced and qualified guide, pick up the required safety elements, like a hard hat and buoyancy aid, and start safely exploring caves, scrambling around cliffs and jumping into beautiful waters!
The nearest venue for coasteering from our London location is Dancing Ledge on the Jurassic Coast in Dorset. An incredible natural playground, coasteering along the Jurassic Coast features swimming through caves and exploring with hidden beaches; this is one awesome, thrilling adventure!
Hiking, Yorkshire Dales, Yorkshire
Less than a two-hour drive from Manchester, the Yorkshire Dales is perfect hiking territory, suitable for all ages and offers some of the UK’s best walking trails. Hire an SUV from our range of top-notch, high-powered and comfortable SUV range from our Manchester location, pack in the friends and family and head out to the beautiful Yorkshire Dale National Park. Enjoy thousands of square miles of moors, valleys, hills and villages. With so many routes to choose from it’s hard to pick just one. However, a walk through Langstrothdale is an easy, 2-mile, child-friendly circular route full of limestone pavement, glaciated valleys and flower-rich hay meadows.
White Water Rafting, across the UK
While flying to exotic locations for white water rafting holidays is definitely a blast, there are so many great rivers and white-water centres in the UK that shouldn’t be missed! UK white water rafting has everything from Olympic-level white water parks, dam fed waterways and wild, natural river rapids where you can enjoy the stunning scenery. One of the most famous venues, Lee Valley, was built for the 2012 London Olympics. Sitting just outside London, in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, this centre offers a 300-metre course with plenty of cool features and is an easy day trip for your next visit to London.
